Jean is the past president of the Friends of the Hoke Library. She was Director of the Library School at Western Michigan University and president of the American Library Association. She also taught at the University of Kentucky and UC Berkeley. In 1971 she founded the International Association of School Librarianship, an international organization that meets annually with 90 countries represented.
Jean’s education includes a B.A. from Keuka College (NY), a B.S.LS. from Western Reserve University, an M.A. in Elementary Education from Western Michigan University, a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University (Librarianship) and an honorary D.Litt. from Keuka College.
An author, lecturer, and award winner, Jean received the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Association of Media Educators in 1985. She has traveled extensively around the world promoting library education and school library administration. She was recently honored with the Dr. Jean Lowrie Endowment for advanced study in school library science at Florida State University.
She resides in Jensen Beach in the home her father designed and built.
